The name for sloth in Spanish is Oso Perezoso... which roughly translates into lazy bear. Fitting I suppose.

There are both two-toed and three-toed sloth species found in Costa Rica, but there are a total of 6 species world-wide.

Sloths are related to anteaters and armadillos. Anteaters I get, but armadillos? Wow!

Sloths move so slowly because they have the slowest digestive system and metabolism known in the animal kingdom so they need to conserve their energy. So maybe lazy is not such a fitting name after all.

Sloths sleep up to 20 hours per day and only come down out of the trees to defecate once per week. Ok, lazy does seem to fit after all.

Sloths may look cute and cuddly, but never touch them! Their fur is an entire eco-system in itself full of mites, algae, fungus and other bugs. Yuck!

Sloths in Costa Rica are not endangered, only the Pygmy Sloths in Panama and the Maned Sloth in Brazil are.
