Of all the things to do in Monteverde, The Monteverde Bat Jungle is a world class bat exhibit that should not be missed when visiting Costa Rica's cloud forest region. It is the culmination of 40 years of worldwide research by Dr. Richard Laval a long time member and outstanding citizen of the Monteverde community. His mission through this interactive and educational exhibit is the hope that it will give you a whole new appreciation for these often misunderstood creatures of the night.
Educational displays cover nearly every facet of a bat's existence. You will learn about the diversity and abundance of bats in Costa Rica, where they roost, what they eat, and how their wings compare with the wings of birds. The fascinating ways bats use echolocation will be explored, and if you are lucky you can witness the feeding habits of vampire bats, fruit bats, and all 8 species of bats you can encounter at The Bat Jungle in Monteverde.
One of the goals of The Bat Jungle is educating visitors in Costa Rica on the importance of bat conservation for controlling the insect population, regenerating tropical forest and pollinating flowers. Specific conservation issues including the construction of bat houses and transporting unwanted bat populations among others and we hope a visit to the bat jungle will inspire its visitors to be more aware of.
More than 95 bats representing eight different species live in a flight space that's designed to look like a night time cloud forest. Inside this enclosure you can watch the bats feed, fly and just hanging out while you can listen to the ultrasonic echolocation calls made by the bats which picked up by a special microphone and broadcast on loudspeakers throughout the viewing area. For the best tour experience, and the best chance of seeing the bats live in action we recommend the tours departing at 10am and 2pm that fall during the bat feeding times.
For a unique experience in Costa Rica or anywhere in the world, we recommend a visit to The Bat Jungle Tour in Monteverde as a must see exhibit for the whole family. Don't miss out, book your bat tour with The Real Deal tours today!
